Fishing adventures await in Colorado! Spring is the perfect time to plan a fly fishing trip to local rivers, ponds, lakes, and creeks. We highly recommend planning an excursion during your Breckenridge vacation rental stay. Check out these tips to plan a Breck fly fishing trip you won’t soon forget. We think you’ll be “hooked” for life!

What To Know

Anglers look forward to the spring months when the snow begins to melt and we transition to outdoor activities in warm weather. What makes this area a paradise for fishing enthusiasts? The Blue River, Eagle River, Colorado River, Arkansas River, and South Platte River are all located within an hour’s drive of Breckenridge. You can also explore small streams, reservoirs, and alpine lakes like Lake Dillon.

You’ll need to purchase a fishing license from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife, or through a local guide service store, for everyone age 16 or older in your party. Familiarize yourself with fishing near Breckenridge and local regulations, depending on what type of fishing appeals to you most. Wading, river, or lake float fishing each provide a different experience. In the spring (and depending on where you fish), you’ll likely catch rainbow and cutthroat trout. We like this first-timer’s blog for a brief overview of what to expect when fly fishing in Breckenridge, Co.

Renting gear is easy and can make packing more manageable, especially with air travel. Equipment is typically included in your package (rod, reel, waders, boots, and terminal tackle) when you plan to fly fish with a guide. Don’t forget light (waterproof) jackets and layers, sunglasses, and sunscreen!

Book Your Fishing Tour

Experienced fly fishers usually have their favorite spots, but visitors can benefit from the expertise of local guides. We suggest booking your guided excursion when travel dates are confirmed, as availability is limited, especially from April through October. Guides can help make your trip special by making expert recommendations, providing lessons, and taking your group’s needs and preferences into consideration.

Mountain Angler is the oldest fly shop and guide service in Summit County, founded by fishing legend Jackson Streit. Take maximum advantage of their valuable experience and knowledge to plan the perfect trip for your family (hint: great idea for a gift for Dad!). Shop their store to purchase gear and collect valuable tips and tricks!

Breckenridge Outfitters sells and rents gear and offers half or full-day fly fishing experiences. If peace and quiet sounds like your ideal adventure, fishing in private water locations can also be arranged with many guide services. Free Orvis fly fishing basics classes are great for the novice fly fisher, and there are many ways to familiarize yourself with the nuances and lingo of fly fishing ahead of time.

Trouts Fly Fishing is another local guided tour resource, and they can help you understand the pros and cons of public versus private water trips. Big Ed’s Fishing Ventures and Silver Flask Fishing can also offer information and access to guided experiences.
